The New Normal: Why You Should Consider Outpatient Surgery Over Inpatient Procedures

It has been a long-standing debate whenever a patient needs to undergo surgery – is it safe to choose an outpatient procedure or is inpatient care the better option? Over the years, doctors and health professionals are seeing a shift toward outpatient care as it costs less and can benefit the patient more. To further strengthen the belief that ambulatory care is safe, a talk on global trends in healthcare was spearheaded by Dr. Norman San Agustin, president and CEO of Asian Breast Center. Together with his former colleagues from Morristown Medical Center – Dr. Donald Allegra, Dr. John Allegra, and Dr. Barnet Eskin – Dr. San Agustin shed light on the advantages of ambulatory care and the dangers of inpatient care.

The insightful seminar, which was held at Centuria Medical Makati where the Asian Breast Center is also located, tackled infection control and how breast cancer surgeries can be done in an outpatient setting. Hospitals are considered the most dangerous places in the world, and it’s the duty of the doctor to make sure a patient is discharged as soon as possible to avoid hospital-acquired infections. “There are three pillars of infection control – hand hygiene, environmental cleaning and antibiotic stewardship. Proper hand hygiene is probably the single most important thing one can do to reduce the transmission of bacteria. Our mindset is that every infection should be treated as a case of smallpox. Our goal is to have zero infections,” shares Dr. Donald Allegra.

Given the probability of contracting infections, many doctors aim to shorten the duration of a patient’s stay in the hospital as the shorter the length of stay, the less risk of getting infections. This belief supports the idea of promoting outpatient surgeries. “What we found in these comparisons between ambulatory care centers and in-hospital breast surgeries are, results were better in the ambulatory care centers. Patient satisfaction is better and costs are favorable. It’s okay and safe to do ambulatory surgery,” adds Dr. John Allegra.

Asian Breast Center, a one-stop comprehensive ambulatory breast care center offers consultations, diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine, surgery, and radiation therapy. Headed by Dr. Norman San Agustin, the center takes pride as a world-class and innovative breast facility that brings personalized, supportive, and evidence-based patient care. Century Inaugurates First ‘Medical Mall’ in the Philippines

Dubbed as the country’s first medical mall, Centuria Medical Makati aims to give a world-class experience to both local and foreign patients

The Philippines’ expanding economy, public infrastructure, and job market have positioned the country to become a haven for expats and foreigners seeking a better quality of life. This includes the medical tourism industry, where people from all over the world are realizing that the country offers exceptional health care at a fraction of the cost.

Noted real estate developer Century Properties ventures into this booming industry via Centuria Medical Makati, a 500-clinic, 28-story outpatient facility located in Century City, a 3.4-hectare  mixed-use development in Barangay Poblacion. Touted as the country’s first medical mall, Centuria Medical Makati aims to give a world-class experience to both local and foreign patients by combining the technology and expertise of a tertiary hospital with the luxurious, laid-back ambiance of a lifestyle mall.

For medical director Dr. Chelsea Elizabeth Samson, Centuria Medical Makati is a one-stop shop for a wide-range of patients as it offers a vast range of medical services and procedures, giving patients a lot of options to choose from. Also included is the Urgent Care Clinic, which is open 24/7 and caters to patients who need immediate medical attention, but facing conditions that are not necessarily life-threatening such as cough and colds, headaches and dizziness, and minor cuts and abrasions. Completing the centers of excellence is the Executive Screening Center, which provides comprehensive and personalized executive checkups to evaluate the patient’s health status and detect unrecognized health risks.

Visitors who prefer to complete their executive checkups without having to leave the premises can check in to the Executive Guest Suites located at the eighth floor. These are fully furnished hotel-style suites that provide a unique healing environment for patients, complete with round-the-clock assistance and choice recovery meals.

Chiropractic medicine could be the answer to your back, joint pains

ARE you suffering from recurring back and joint pains? Maybe it’s time for you to see a chiropractor.

Defined as the “diagnosis and treatment of the musculoskeletal system – particularly the spinal column”, Chiropractic Medicine is pretty much uncommon in this part of the world.

In fact, only a handful of Filipinos are informed about this type of alternative medicine, said Dr. Mark Enriquez, founder of the Singapore-based Alpha Chiropractic, which has a newly-opened branch at Centuria Medical Makati in Kalayaan Avenue, Makati.

“Oftentimes, Filipinos who experience back discomfort or body aches usually head over to the nearest massage salons to alleviate their pain. What they don’t know is that while massages can temporarily ease the pain, the discomfort would still be there in a matter of days as the body is already experiencing an imbalance in the musculoskeletal structure,” he said.

In most cases, the pain stems from a spinal disproportion or imbalance that leads to the body not functioning properly. If not treated, the imbalance can lead to the body wearing out, which overtime can cause injury and pain.

Dr. Enriquez believes that this is where Chiropractic Medicine offers a solution as it treats the imbalance and pain through the realignment and manipulation of the spine and joints.

Unlike massages which can temporarily ease the discomfort, chiropractic gets to the root of the issue.Using specific treatment plans, chiropractors perform a variety of adjustments and therapies to the body, particularly in the spinal area, to increase optimal body function and remove unwanted strains and injuries.

Some people consider Chiropractic Medicine to be a “rich man’s service” because treatmentsessions may cost higher than a massage.  But treating the pain at the source and preventing it from recurring will benefit the body in the long run.

In the Philippines, there are 34 registered chiropractors, and only 23 of these are based in Metro Manila. This small number prompted Dr. Enriquez to expand and bring his Australian-accredited practice here.

“As Filipinos engage in a healthy lifestyle, it is important for Chiropractic to be included in one’s wellness regimen to know one’s body and to make it function properly for any fitness programs.”

According to Dr. Enriquez, locating his Chiropractic clinic in a world-class outpatient medical mall like Centuria would enable him to promote and highlight the medical practice to various communities such as residents, athletes, fitness enthusiasts and employees.

An Australian citizen born to Filipino parents, Dr. Mark Enriquez is an internationally certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner (ICCSP)  and registered member of the Chiropractors Registration Board of Australia (AHPRA). New Generation Aesthetics Center Opens at Centuria Medical Makati

Cosmetic surgery has become a $20 billion industry worldwide. According to the latest Global Cosmetic Surgery and Service Market Report, North America accounts for 45 percent of the global market and Asia is fast catching up as the “next frontier” for the practice.

The Philippines is following the Asian trend with the increase of aesthetic centers that offer surgical and minimally invasive procedures at competitive prices. The practice has gained mass appeal over the years, and is no longer just associated with celebrities and people from high society. These days, anyone who needs an extra boost of confidence can turn to aesthetic procedures for help.
For Drs. Al and Grace Jaafar of Neu Advanced Aesthetics, cosmetic surgery is a work of art, something that brings great satisfaction to both patient and surgeon.

“Doing these treatments is more than skin-deep. We don’t just make a difference on the external part — in many ways, cosmetic surgery also boosts the self-esteem of patients and allow them to have confidence,” said Dr. Grace Jaafar.

Situated on the 17th floor of Centuria Medical Makati, Neu Advanced Aesthetics is a new generation clinic that offers both invasive and non-invasive cosmetic treatments. Founded by the husband and wife tandem of Dr. Al and Grace Jaafar, the aesthetics center adopts an artistic and a non-traditional approach on cosmetic surgery with patient-centered values.

Dr. Al, a board-certified cosmetic surgeon who practiced general surgery for several years before shifting to surgical aesthetics, points out that the clinic’s mission is to provide better results to clients by incorporating advanced medical innovations and technologies that deliver safe and remarkable results.

“Rather than just focus on the usual surgical techniques or medical procedures, we also integrate technological advances such as the use of new machines so that our patients have the option to choose procedures that would have amazing results, faster recovery time and a wide safety margin.”

The clinic’s major expertise is in cosmetic surgery procedures such as rhinoplasty, eyelids/eyebags surgery, facelifts, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, power-assisted liposuction (PAL), and Vaser liposuction.

Non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures being offered by Neu includes body contouring, using the only non-surgical option for liposuction, US FDA approved Liposonix, RF body contouring and skin tightening treatment (Accent Ultra Contour V and V Lift), mesotherapy (LipoDissolve), microneedling, fillers, Botox, PRPs and facial treatments.

The center also offers services for Cosmetic Gynecology. Headed by Dr. Grace Jaafar, it is one of the few cosmetic surgery clinics in the Philippines to provide both surgical and laser procedures for the female genitalia.

Dr. Grace, an ob-gyne who is a certified senior member of the European Society of Aesthetic Gynecology is among few Philippine doctors to specialize in this field. Her background and extensive experience as a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist coupled with her vast training as a cosmetic gynecologist makes her a trusted and credible surgeon in this field.
Among her major services are vaginoplasty, labiaplasty and Femilift non-surgical laser vaginoplasty.

“One important difference of Neu with other cosmetic centers is the location. Since we choose to locate at a world-class, one-stop medical arts building complete with brand new facilities, our patients don’t have to go outside the clinic to undergo several tests before proceeding with the operation making it more convenient to them,” he said.
